Sharara, Gharara or Palazzo? Know Your Bottoms

Three flared-leg styles, often confused. Here is what actually sets them apart.

Sharara, gharara and palazzo all give you movement and drama below the waist — but they are genuinely different garments. Here is how to tell them apart and when each shines.

Sharara

Wide, flared trousers that fall loosely from the waist all the way down — think of a divided skirt. Sharara is fluid and festive, paired with a short kurti or blouse, and moves beautifully. A favourite for weddings and celebrations where you want flow and grace.

Gharara

Fitted through the thigh, then flaring dramatically from the knee into wide, gathered legs — usually with a distinct decorative band at the knee where the flare begins. Gharara is the most traditional and regal of the three, rich with heritage, and a striking choice for a bride's family or a formal function.

Palazzo

Straight, wide-legged trousers with a clean, contemporary fall — flared but not gathered. Palazzo is the modern, versatile option: comfortable, chic, and equally right with a kurti for daywear or a dressy top for the evening. The easiest of the three to wear casually.

At a glance

  • Flares from the waist, fluid and festive: sharara.
  • Fitted to the knee then dramatic flare, most traditional: gharara.
  • Straight wide leg, modern and versatile: palazzo.

All three depend on the right fabric and construction to fall well — too little structure and the flare collapses, too stiff and it fights you. A good tailor gets that balance right and cuts the rise and length to your body.
